What is a LLLT?

Washington has a cool profession called the Limited License Legal Technician. Think of them as a paralegal on steroids, with a bunch of extra family law education, and that's basically a LLLT.

They can give you legal advice. They can help navigate family law issues like divorce. They are a more affordable option than an attorney in many cases, because they don't need to pay off six figures of law school debt.

The main thing they can't do, which an attorney can, is represent you in court.

But for people doing some or all of their divorce pro se, or representing themselves, a LLLT can be a good option to get questions answered, and to get legal advice specific to your problem.

They aren't well-known, and they certainly aren't well advertised, but we're doing our part to let people know LLLTs can be really helpful with family court legal problems. The state has since sunset the program, but there are still LLLTs ready to help you.

Here is a directory of all the LLLTs in Washington, from the state bar association. You can click through the names to get things like contact information and websites. Generally it's best to find someone with experience in the county you're filing in. If you have any other questions about how to use a LLLT please contact us.
